Chromite is a mineral that contains chromium. It is considered a strategic mineral, which generally means that it is necessary for military and industrial use during periods of national emergency. The strategic mineral concept was created during World War I and became law just prior to World War II with the passage of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939.
Chromite, a brownish black cubic mineral belonging to the spinel group, is the only ore mineral from which metallic chromium and chromium compounds are obtained. It has the chemical formula FeCr 2 O 4, and a theoretical composition of 32.0% FeO and 68.0% Cr 2 O 3. In its natural form it occurs in solid solution with other minerals in the spinel group, so chrome contents are less than the theoretical 68%.
Chromium mining and processing In nature, chromium is found as chromite ore, composed of elemental iron, oxygen and chromium (FeOCr 2 O 3). 1,2 heavily in about a 700 m vicinity around the Countries with commercially significant chromite mines include Russia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Turkey, the Philippines and India.2 Chromite ore is initially
Chromite, the principle ore of the element chromium, is a commercially valuable mineral. However, due to mining restrictions and the fact that Chromite is not commonly found in crystallized form, it is not well-represented in mineral collections.
Chromium (Cr) is a hard, bluish metallic element. The only ore of chromium is the mineral chromite and 99 percent of the worlds chromite is found in southern Africa and Zimbabwe. Geologists estimate that there are about 11 billion tons of mineable chromite ore in the world, enough to supply the current demand for hundreds of years.

Chromite is mined in over 20 countries for various purposes. However, the majority of production is given only by the four countries for the production of steel. The rise of usage of the chromium demands to produce 570 million metric tons as of 2019. Let us see some of
Chromite is found in beach sands derived from the weathering of chromite-bearing rocks and laterite soils that developed over peridotite. Beach sand rich in chromite and other heavy minerals is sometimes mined, processed to remove heavy minerals, and returned to the environment.

Underground Chromite Mine Feasibility study. Balasore Alloys commissioned SRK to undertake a feasibility study for its underground chromite properties in Odisha. The first study was for a mine planned below its existing open pit operation. SRK guided a fresh exploration program to generate data for the study. Following the study, detailed engineering will be initiated.
Global Chromite Mining and Processing Economics. The value of the mineral chromite is in its content of the base metal chromium. The value of chromium is in its industrial applications, especially when alloyed with iron to produce a wide variety of steels that are more durable largely due to their corrosion resistance.
Remarks. Zambales region is well-known for its rich Nickel Laterite and Chromite desposits. Old metallurgical and refractory chromite mines in the 70s left behind economic chromite-rich tailings in Masinloc. Upgrade of these materials will result into economically marketable chromite sand. Low grade chromite can also be processed and upgraded ...
